Welcome to our school
A 'Good' rating for Leavening.
A small school with a big reputation. This is how Leavening Community Primary School has long been perceived by pupils and parents. Ofsted also share that opinion declaring it “a good school” with “head teacher, staff and governors all sharing a commitment and determination to provide the best possible learning and experiences for pupils.”
Highlighted in the Ofsted Report is the link between small class sizes and “strong relationships between pupils of all ages” described as “warm and encouraging”. “Teachers (are) using small class sizes to their advantage” and “planning tasks precisely matched to pupils’ learning needs.”
Lead Inspector, Mr Chicken, spent two full days at the school conducting a markedly rigorous and scrupulous inspection”, says Head Teacher Mrs Mitchell. “He observed all teachers and teaching assistants over numerous lessons and spoke to children and parents at the school, as well as taking into account an online questionnaire before arriving at the decision to grant the school a Good rating. We are are absolutely delighted with this result which I attribute to the hard work of everyone involved.”
The Report gives particular emphasis to the “good and rapidly improving” Early Years provision with the recently appointed leader, Miss Evely, promoting “outstanding learning”. According to the Inspector, Miss Evely “creates a highly stimulating learning environment and organises a wide range of interesting activities, which make good use of both the indoor and outdoor areas.” Leavening primary school now has a rising numbers of pupils attending Nursery and Reception - the highest number for many years.
For many parents, the school’s rural village location and abundance of outdoor space is a big plus and, in the Report, the physical education and themed learning outside the classroom is emphasised very positively. “The forest school initiative is popular with pupils and parents, all of whom value the opportunities of outdoor learning.
Being singled out for particular praise is the “highly effective leadership” of Mrs Mitchell, who joined the school in 2012 and is an inspiration to all teachers and pupils.
Good teaching has raised pupils’ achievement with progress being particularly strong in reading and mathematics, successfully led by Mrs Peers who has made a huge impact with her ‘Big Maths’. The school curriculum is “vibrant”, specialist teachers have “good subject knowledge in art, music and physical education”, and we learn from the Report that pupils enjoy coming to school, are well behaved, motivated and eager to learn.
This is a lovely school and parents are “overwhelmingly supportive” says Mrs Mitchell “We will continue to work hard to maintain and improve upon these very high standards.”
Welcome to our fabulous school – known as ‘North Yorkshire’s best kept secret’ – and thank you for showing an interest.
Judged in 2015 as ‘Good’ by Ofsted with a ‘highly stimulating learning environment’, Leavening Community Primary School also has exceptional outdoor learning opportunities and sports facilities, small class sizes, offers a range of after school clubs and combines dynamic teaching with excellent pastoral care. Our thriving nursery and Early Years provision caters for children aged 3 to 11 years.
I have had the pleasure of being the head teacher here since September 2012 and have to say that Leavening Community Primary School is the perfect village school. A real sense of community and belonging exists here. I am excited to be building on the fantastic opportunities that our children already enjoy, ensuring their childhoods are further enriched through excellence in learning and outstanding care.
I would warmly welcome visits to the school so you can see for yourself just how wonderful it really is. Thank you.
Sian Mitchell, Headteacher
